Planning Process

In order to achieve a proper recording plenty of planning had to be done, this involved microphone choice, room choice, musicians and outboard equipment. Even though I planned everything way before going in a studio when I encountered the first problem, everything change but I still had an idea of what I wanted. Aspiring to reach the analog sound I chose to use mostly analog equipment. However, even before planning all this I had to implement some of the techniques acquired from the first project. One of them included an echo chamber which at the first impression seemed impossible to deal with but proved to be much simpler than I thought, a second idea was to record the drums using only two microphone and the third one was to use mostly velocity ribbon microphones.

After giving lots of thought to the project, I ended up needing seven microphones, two amps, one piano (grand if possible), drum kit and a good singer. In terms of instrumentation, the track is quite simple but you need a very powerful voice to come close to the original even though this is not what we entirely want. After all this I had to speak with the musicians and book the equipment without being entirely sure that I will be able to implement everything I planned. The first problem encountered was to find a serious singer because two girls already let me down. The second problem was the booking of the studio unfortunately I could not get the band to play together in the same room because the studio was not available so I did not had how to record the vibe of an entire band playing, like they did back in the 1960.
