In the first part
of this module, we had to do research about a track/album, regarding how was
the album produced and how successful. This research included the following:
equipment used, location, artists, engineers, writers, producers, room,
acoustics of the room, recording techniques and so on.
For the first assessment, I chose a
track recorded by Etta James in 1960 called At Last which is a 1941 song,
written by Mark Gordon and Harry Warren for a musical called Orchestra Wives.
With the information gathered from
my first assignment I had to choose a similar genre track and try to implement
some of the techniques used to record the first one, making notes of the similarities
and differences in approach also highlighting the problems encountered while
recording, mixing and mastering.
Because I chose a very old song, the
amount of information you can find is minimum unless the track was a real
success. Also on that period, America had big problems especially with black
people, so even if At Last was a big hit among the black people, in America the
white people did not really heard much about it.
Anyway I managed to find plenty of
information regarding the recording area, equipment used and procedures they
followed at that time even though the information found was not always in
depth, I assumed a couple of theories on some of them based on other readings
and listening done during my research.
